Wormwood usually grows on roadsides and waste places, and can be found growing over the greater part of Europe. In Britain it appears to be truly indigenous near the sea, though it is found all over the country. Wormwood is classified as a bitter herb and is used to increase appetite and to assist with digestive disorders.

Research has shown that when bitter substances are detected by the taste bud receptors at the back of the tongue prior to a meal, they have a priming effect on the upper digestive function - this is most noticeable if digestion is below optimum. Nerve reflexes from the taste buds stimulate the vagus nerve, which is responsible for signalling many functions needed during digestion. Wormwood is used as a bitter herb to improve appetite. It stimulates the secretion of saliva and bile production and is considered to have a priming effect on the upper digestive function. It relieves indigestion, heartburn and reflux, and helps maintain healthy digestive function. Claims are based on traditional use in western herbal medicine.

Dosage

Infuse one 5 mL level metric teaspoon with one cup of boiling water, steep for 10-15 minutes and strain.
